Nations, or powers, are the heart and soul of Axis and Allies. They make up the "Axis" and "Allies" of Axis and Allies, and which nations make these up varies from game to game.
Major nations are found in all global Axis and Allies games, and at least two of them are in all games covering smaller theatres.
Germany, the Third Reich, is the main European Axis power, and almost invariably, will face off with all three major Allied powers: Russia in the Eastern Front, US and UK in the Atlantic Front, and (not always, this depends on the game) UK in the African Front. Found in Axis and Allies Original, Europe, Revised, 1942, 50th Anniversary, Europe 1940, D-Day and Battle of the Bulge.

Japan, the Rising Sun, is the main Pacific Axis power, and it will go head to head with the US in the Pacific, the UK in SE Asia and Russia in Siberia. If it can take Amur from Russia and India from UK, it can easily blitz across the Allied mainland. Found in Axis and Allies Original, Pacific, Revised, 1942, 50th Anniversay, Pacific 1940 and Guadalcanal

The Soviet Union, the USSR, the Motherland, is the punching bag of Axis and Allies. It takes the hits for the Allies, while its overseas comrades deliver them. Its survival is essential for the Allies, for it directs the attention of Germany east, so the US and the UK can slip through the cracks of Western German possessions. Found in Axis and Allies Original, Europe, Revised, 1942, Europe 1940 and 50th Anniversary.

The United Kingdom, the Land Where the Sun Never Sets, is spread thin. These are the last days of the British Empire, and it is spread far and wide. Defending all of its possessions won't be easy, as Egypt and India are gems in the eyes of the Axis. Should the UK wish to hold its own, it must defend against the fascist attacks in these two territories, as they both are gates protecting the riches of the Middle East and Africa. Found in Axis and Allies Original, Europe, Pacific, Revised, 1942, 50th Anniversary, Pacific 1940, Europe 1940, D-Day and Battle of the Bulge.

The United States, the Sleeping Giant, is the ultimate swing power. Should it concentrate all its efforts in the Pacific theatre, Japan will surely fall. But should it concentrate entirely on Germany, Russia could survive the relentless waves of German tanks. Should it play the balancing act it was meant to play, it might just achieve victory... Found in Axis and Allies Original, Europe, Pacific, Revised, 1942, 50th Anniversary, Pacific 1940, Europe 1940, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge and Guadalcanal.
